In 2018, PJI established the Research Advisory Committee (RAC) to ensure that we understand and use new research to guide our theory of change and framework for implementation. We also want an independent check on our own selection bias—the tendency to like research that confirms our own ideas and to discount research that does not. RAC also serves as a place for other researchers to discuss pretrial justice, and we hope it will inspire rising academics to engage in pretrial research as a part of their thesis or dissertation work

A decade-long research project examining the bail system in New York City has been completed by the New York City Criminal Justice Agency, Inc. (CJA). The research was conceived in the context of CJA’s mission of reducing unnecessary pretrial detention, and it continued in the midst of a national debate about the role of bail and the commercial bail bond industry in the criminal justice system. This final report of the bail project synthesizes the major findings, with the dual objective of making the research results more accessible by gathering them together in one place, while also introducing a level of clarity that is difficult to achieve when disparate findings are viewed only as separate pieces

Assessments offer a data-driven way to look at pretrial release and the likelihood of a person appearing for court with no new arrests...The takeaway here is that a system or organization cannot thrive on data alone—even one that is literally based on algorithms
This paper examines how jail inmate data can contribute to research on the pretrial release process. Specifically, relationships between the pretrial process and income, legal representation, and bail are studied, using the data series Survey of Inmates of Local Jails (SILJ), while understanding the limitations of the jail inmate data due to the nature and origin of the data
